Is ‘organic’ REALLY necessary?

Nowadays, the grocery store can really get confusing.  Instead of going to the store to buy ‘apples’, you may find yourself overwhelmed with choices of ‘apples’. Should I buy organic?  Should I buy local? If I don’t buy organic, are they still good for us? If I don’t buy local, am I a bad person?  For many, the decision comes down to cost.

I know I’d like my money to go as far as it can and yet, I’d like the best “bang for my buck”! 

According to the Environmental Working Group (www.ewg.org) in order to balance your budget and your nutrition, you need to be informed.  I wholeheartedly agree!

Therefore, here is the standard list of which foods  absorb and keep the greatest amounts of pesticides, deemed “The Dirty Dozen”.

  1. Apples
  2. Celery
  3. Cherries
  4. Grapes (imported)
  5. Lettuce
  6. Nectarines
  7. Peaches
  8. Pears
  9. Potatoes
  10. Spinach
  11. Strawberries
  12. Sweet Bell Peppers

The top twelve foods that carry the least amount of pesticides are:

  1. Asparagus
  2. Avocados
  3. Bananas
  4. Broccoli
  5. Cabbage
  6. Kiwi
  7. Mango
  8. Onions
  9. Papaya
  10. Pineapples
  11. Sweet Corn (frozen)
  12. Sweet Peas (frozen)

Buying local is an additional bonus, and many times, you can find local producers who may not be “certified organic”, but do not use any pesticides.  So, get to know your local farmers, you may find a ‘sweet’ treasure as well.  :o)
